Southwest Airlines Pilots’ Association

Southwest Airlines Pilots’ Association (SWAPA) celebrated 30 years of service to the pilots of Southwest Airlines on March 27, 2008. The airline industry has undergone numerous changes, especially since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The goal for Southwest pilots, however, has not changed as we strive to be the most productive, efficient and safe pilot workforce in the industry.

SWAPA and Southwest Airlines company officials began contract negotiations in September 2006 under provisions of the Railway Labor Act (RLA). Under RLA, airline contracts do not expire. Rather, they become “amendable” or subject to change. The current Southwest pilot contract amendable date was Aug. 31, 2006; current contract terms remain in effect until a new agreement is ratified. The contract negotiation process is expected to last from 18-24 months.
